Ba Zi Calendar 2027: Solar Terms and Key Dates

Old open book lit by warm lamplight

The Ba Zi calendar 2027 runs on the sun, not the moon. Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) reads every birth and every event against the twenty-four solar terms (节气 jiéqì), so the dates that matter for a chart are neither the festival dates on the lunar calendar nor the first of each Gregorian month. This page lists the 2027 boundaries to the minute, the festival dates that sit around them, and the places where the two calendars part ways.

Solar terms, not lunar months

The lunar calendar sets the festivals and the date of Chinese New Year. The Ba Zi calendar 2027 does not use it for pillars. It divides the solar year into twenty-four jiéqì, roughly fifteen days apart, tracking the sun through the seasons.

The twenty-four come in two kinds. Twelve month-establishing terms, the jié (节 jié), mark where each month pillar (月柱 yuèzhù) begins. Twelve mid-terms, the qì (气 qì), fall inside the months and leave the pillar alone. For chart work, only the jié move anything.

The winter solstice (冬至 dōngzhì) is the best-known qì. It arrives on 22 December 2026, early morning (04:50 Singapore time): a major date in the household year, and silent for pillar purposes. When a practitioner says the month has changed, a jié has passed.

Where the 2027 year begins

The Fire Goat year, Dīng Wèi (丁未), begins at 立春 (lìchūn), the start of spring, at 2027-02-04 09:45. Lunar New Year (春节 chūnjié) follows on Saturday 2027-02-06. We use 立春 for the year pillar because Ba Zi is built on the solar year: the stems and branches turn with the sun, and the lunar date names the festival.

The two-day gap creates a disputed window. A birth from 09:45 on 4 February through 5 February 2027 is a Fire Goat in Ba Zi, while the lunar calendar still counts it in the Horse year until 6 February. Earlier still, anyone born from 1 January 2027 to 09:44 on 4 February is a Fire Horse (丙午 bǐng wǔ) in Ba Zi. If your birthday sits near either line, the Chinese zodiac finder settles it against the exact time rather than a guess.

Key boundary dates for 2027

These are the twelve jié that open each month pillar of the Ding Wei year. Times are UTC+8, the clock shared by Singapore and China Standard Time.

  • 立春 lìchūn, start of spring: 2027-02-04 09:45 (year and 壬寅 Tiger month begin)
  • 惊蛰 jīngzhé: 2027-03-06 03:39 (癸卯 Rabbit month)
  • 清明 qīngmíng: 2027-04-05 08:17 (甲辰 Dragon month)
  • 立夏 lìxià, start of summer: 2027-05-06 01:24 (乙巳 Snake month)
  • 芒种 mángzhòng: 2027-06-06 05:25 (丙午 Horse month)
  • 小暑 xiǎoshǔ: 2027-07-07 15:36 (丁未 Goat month)
  • 立秋 lìqiū, start of autumn: 2027-08-08 01:26 (戊申 Monkey month)
  • 白露 báilù: 2027-09-08 04:28 (己酉 Rooster month)
  • 寒露 hánlù: 2027-10-08 20:16 (庚戌 Dog month)
  • 立冬 lìdōng, start of winter: 2027-11-07 23:38 (辛亥 Pig month)
  • 大雪 dàxuě: 2027-12-07 16:37 (壬子 Rat month)
  • 小寒 xiǎohán: 2028-01-06 03:54 (癸丑 Ox month, still inside the Fire Goat year)

Two boundaries deserve a flag. 立冬 falls at 23:38 on 7 November, minutes before midnight, so 7 and 8 November births sit close to a month seam. And the final entry, 小寒, opens the Ox month in January 2028 while the year pillar remains Dīng Wèi: the Gregorian year has turned, and the Ba Zi year has not.

Festival dates in 2027

Festivals follow the lunar calendar, so they are listed here for planning rather than for pillars. Set beside the solar terms, they show how the two calendars drift past each other.

Festival 2027 date
Lunar New Year 春节 2027-02-06
Lantern Festival 元宵 2027-02-20
Qing Ming 清明 2027-04-05
Dragon Boat 端午 2027-06-09
Qixi 七夕 2027-08-08
7th lunar month (Hungry Ghost month) 2027-08-02 to 2027-08-31
Zhong Yuan 中元 (15th day of the 7th month) 2027-08-16
Mid-Autumn 中秋 2027-09-15
Double Ninth 重阳 2027-10-08
Winter Solstice 冬至 (2026) 2026-12-22 04:50

A few overlaps are worth noticing. Qing Ming the festival and 清明 the solar term share 2027-04-05; the term arrives at 08:17 and opens the 甲辰 Dragon month. Qixi on 2027-08-08 shares its date with 立秋 at 01:26, the start of the 戊申 Monkey month. Double Ninth on 2027-10-08 falls on the day of 寒露, which opens the 庚戌 Dog month at 20:16 that evening.

The seventh lunar month runs 2027-08-02 to 2027-08-31 and so straddles a Ba Zi boundary: its first days sit in the 丁未 month and the rest in 戊申. A lunar month and a Ba Zi month are different units, and they rarely line up.

Why your birth time zone matters

Every time on this page is UTC+8. A solar term is one astronomical moment, so the same boundary shows a different clock time in London or New York. If a birth falls within a few hours of a jié, convert it to UTC+8 before deciding the month pillar. Near 立春, the conversion can move a chart a whole year.

The four start-of-season terms, 立春, 立夏, 立秋 and 立冬, are the ones worth memorising. They frame the seasons that decide how strongly each element stands in a chart, which is why the five elements in Ba Zi are always read against the month of birth.

Common questions about the 2027 calendar

Does Chinese New Year matter in Ba Zi? Culturally, a great deal; for pillars, no. In 2027 the year pillar turns at 09:45 on 4 February, two days before the celebrations begin.

What happens exactly at a jié? The month pillar changes at once. A birth one minute before 立夏 at 01:24 on 6 May 2027 belongs to the 甲辰 Dragon month; one minute after, to the 乙巳 Snake month. Nothing blends or overlaps.

Why do the times drift between years? The terms follow the sun’s actual position, not a fixed date. 立春 fell at 04:01 on 4 February in 2026 and falls at 09:45 in 2027, which is why serious work uses each year’s exact times rather than a rule of thumb.

Working the Ba Zi calendar 2027 into a chart

For the stem-and-branch pairing on each boundary, and the Five Tigers rule (五虎遁 wǔhǔ dùn) that produces it, see the 2027 monthly pillars table; the month stem table gives the rule for every year stem. For the outgoing year, the Ba Zi calendar for 2026 covers the Fire Horse dates still in force until 立春.

The jié also set the starting age of your luck pillars, which counts the days from birth to the nearest boundary in the direction your cycle runs. A calendar that is wrong by a day shifts that age too.

To pin your own birth to the right side of every boundary in the Ba Zi calendar 2027, plot your chart free with the Ba Zi calculator and let it handle the solar-term timing for you.
