The Bing Zi day pillar (丙子 bǐng zǐ) sets Bǐng 丙, Yang Fire, on the Rat branch 子, which is pure Yang Water. The image is striking: the sun over deep midnight water, light meeting its opposite. Fire that sits on Water sits on the very element that controls it, so this is a bright, radiant Day Master perched above a cool, governing seat.
In Ba Zi (八字 bāzì), the day branch is what the Day Master sits on, and for Bing Zi that seat is Direct Officer. Water disciplines Fire, and here the branch’s main and only qi is Guǐ 癸 Yin Water, standing to the Day Master as Direct Officer. This is a pillar of brilliance under governance.
Personality of the Bing Zi day pillar
Bǐng Fire is the sun of the ten stems: expansive, warm, visible, generous with its energy and impossible to hide. Sitting on Direct Officer (正官 zhèngguān) gives that solar nature a spine of discipline and propriety. Direct Officer is rule, office, responsibility and reputation, and with Guǐ 癸 Water beneath, the Bing Zi native carries an inner sense of duty that tempers the fire.
Where an ungoverned Bǐng can blaze without limit, Bing Zi tends to run bright but accountable. These are often people who want to shine and to do right by the roles they hold, drawn to positions of visible responsibility where standards matter. The Officer beneath the sun gives them poise, a care for how things ought to be done, and a willingness to answer for their conduct.
The tension in the pillar is real, though: Water and Fire directly oppose. The classic reading is of someone warm on the surface who nonetheless feels the constant pull of obligation underneath, and who does best when the demands they answer to are ones they genuinely respect.
The spouse palace
The Rat branch is single and pure. Its one hidden stem, taken verbatim from the reference data, is: Guǐ 癸 (Yin Water) = Direct Officer 正官.
A spouse palace holding one clean stem tends to read with clarity, and here that stem is Direct Officer. In the marriage house, Direct Officer classically points to a relationship marked by structure, respect and a certain formality of commitment, where the partner brings order, standards and a steadying influence over the Day Master’s fire.
Because the same Direct Officer is what the Day Master sits upon and what fills the spouse palace, the theme of governance runs doubly through this pillar’s relationships. One classical detail is worth adding: for a Bǐng woman, Direct Officer is the husband star itself, so Bing Zi places her husband star squarely in the marriage seat — a placement the old texts regard as apt and settled. When the Rat is moved
The Rat is clashed by Wǔ 午 (the Horse) in the Six Clashes (六冲 liùchōng) — Fire against Water at full strength — so Horse years put this disciplined seat under open flame and tend to mark the years when duty and desire argue loudest. Zǐ combines with Chǒu 丑 (the Ox) toward Earth in the Six Combinations (六合 liùhé), quietening the Officer, and joins Shēn 申 and Chén 辰 in the Water frame (三合 sānhé), which swells governance into real pressure. A strong Bǐng carries that frame as authority; a weak one feels it as weight. Neither is a sentence — it is a timetable of when this pillar’s central theme intensifies.
Na Yin
The Na Yin (纳音 nàyīn) of Bing Zi is 涧下水 Jiànxià Shuǐ, Stream Water: the clear brook running down a mountain gully. It is a quietly fitting song for a Fire pillar seated on Water, as though the sun’s reflection travels in the current below. Hold it as poetic flavour only. The opposition of Yang Fire and Yang Water does the analytical work; Stream Water simply lends the pillar a note of clear, moving coolness.

This portrait is Bing Zi standing on its own. In a real reading it is one of four pillars, and the Water beneath the sun can steady or smother depending on the rest.
