A Da Liu Ren (大六壬 dà liù rén) board is built the same way for every question: the Monthly General (月将 yuè jiàng) is aligned over the hour, the Four Lessons (四课 sì kè) are drawn, and the Three Transmissions (三传 sān chuán) fall out. What changes from question to question is where you look. That is the work of the category symbol, and understanding da liu ren lei shen is what turns a finished board into an answer about one specific matter.
The category symbol (类神 lèi shén) is the general or branch that stands in for the thing being asked about. Marriage has its symbols, wealth has its own, illness another. You find the symbol on the board, read its condition, and follow it through the transmission arc. Everything else on the board is context around it.
What a category symbol is
Every question is about something, and that something has a natural representative on the board. Sometimes the representative is one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals — each general is already a category, so 青龙 (qīng lóng, Green Dragon) carries wealth and 白虎 (bái hǔ, White Tiger) carries illness and violence. Sometimes it is a branch defined by its relationship to the day stem, borrowing the same logic Ba Zi uses for its stars.
Two of those branch symbols are worth naming because they recur. The 妻财 (qī cái, “wife-wealth”) branch is the element the day stem controls — money, and a wife for a male querent. The 官鬼 (guān guǐ, “officer-ghost”) branch is the element that controls the day stem — authority, career, and also illness or threat. These are the same relationships that the Ba Zi Ten Gods (十神 shí shén) encode as the Wealth star and the Officer star, applied here to a single moment rather than a whole life.

Notice that one general can serve several matters and one matter can call several generals. 朱雀, the bird of documents and disputes, answers to career, lawsuits, and news alike. Context — the exact wording of the question — decides which reading is live.
Reading the symbol’s state
Locating the symbol is only the first step. Once found, it is read the way any feature on the board is read, along three lines.
Its relationship to the day. Does the symbol generate (生 shēng) the day, or control (克 kè) it, or the reverse? A wealth symbol that the day stem cleanly controls sits within reach. A career symbol controlling the day can mean the office arrives, or that its demands press on you — direction matters as much as presence.
Its seasonal strength. Is the symbol’s element flourishing (旺相 wàng xiàng) or exhausted (休囚 xiū qiú) for the season the question is cast in? A strong symbol acts; a weak one struggles to, whatever else the board says.
Whether it is active or latent. This is the distinction that separates a flat reading from a live one. A symbol appearing in the Three Transmissions (三传 sān chuán) is in motion — the matter is developing. A symbol sitting only in the Four Lessons, never picked up into a transmission, is latent: present in the situation but not yet moving. A question about a deal whose wealth symbol never enters the transmissions is often a question about a deal that will not progress on its own.
Following the transmission arc
When the symbol does appear in the transmissions, the arc gives you timing, which is what Da Liu Ren is precise about. The Initial Transmission (初传 chū chuán) is where the matter originates, the Middle (中传 zhōng chuán) is where it turns, and the Final (末传 mò chuán) is where it settles. A wealth symbol strong in the Initial but controlled by the Final describes money that comes early and then meets an obstacle. The same symbol weak at the start and generated by the end describes the reverse.
This is why the practice reads the arc as a sequence and not a verdict. The category symbol tells you what the board is answering; its state tells you the tendency; the three transmissions tell you when, and in what order, the matter moves. No single feature decides the outcome alone.
