Zodiac Years

Year of the Pig (亥): Years, Personality, Elements and 2026

a body of water surrounded by trees covered in snow

The Year of the Pig closes the twelve-year cycle, the deep Water of early winter, sometimes called the Boar. The Pig is the Earthly Branch hài, yang Water, broad and settling, the sign in which the wheel comes to rest before the Rat begins it again. If you were born in a Pig year you carry the sign classical writers associate with sincerity, generosity, and an easy tolerance for other people.

Which years are Pig years?

These are the Pig years across the modern span, each beginning at that year’s exact Li Chun (立春 lìchūn), around 4 February. Not 1 January, and not Chinese New Year:

As the sign that ends the cycle, the Pig sits right before the Rat, so the boundary works both ways: a birthday in late January or the first days of February can still belong to the Pig even when the new calendar year has arrived, because Li Chun had not yet turned. Confirm which side of the line you fall on with the Chinese zodiac finder; the zodiac years chart gives the exact dates for every year from 1930 to 2035.

The Pig personality

The classical Pig is sincere, generous, and unguarded in a way that others find restful. It gives people the benefit of the doubt, enjoys life’s pleasures without cynicism, and would rather trust and occasionally be wrong than be permanently suspicious. As broad Water it is accommodating and calm, which reads as warmth and, at the extreme, as naivety or over-indulgence. Pigs are loyal, easy-going, and quietly resilient; they forgive readily and hold few grudges.

Hold it lightly, as always. We read charts here, not fortunes, and the Pig is only your year branch, one of eight characters in a full Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) chart. A sharper Day Master can give a Pig shrewdness beneath the open manner; the good nature is a tendency, not the whole picture. To see how the animal fits within the full chart, start at the Ba Zi hub.

The Pig comes last for a reason that flatters it: in the old race it stopped to eat and nap along the way and still finished, unbothered, which is the sign in a sentence. Its broad Water is the deep, settled kind, the reservoir at rest, and it gives the Pig its calm, its appetite for life’s good things, and its easy way with other people. In a working reading the Pig’s strength is sincerity and resilience: it takes people at face value, recovers quickly from setbacks, and holds surprisingly little bitterness. The blind spot is indulgence and a trust that is sometimes too freely given. A Pig can be taken advantage of by those who mistake its good nature for softness. Its growth is discernment without cynicism.

The five kinds of Pig

Over a sixty-year cycle the Pig takes each element once, and the year stem colours its good nature:

  • Wood Pig (1935 and every 60 years): warm and cooperative, generosity with purpose.
  • Fire Pig (1947 and every 60 years): more spirited and sociable, the openly cheerful Pig.
  • Earth Pig (1959 and every 60 years): grounded and steady, the most dependable of the Pigs.
  • Metal Pig (1971 and every 60 years): firmer and more resolute, kindness with a backbone.
  • Water Pig (1983 and every 60 years): doubly fluid and empathetic, deeply easy-going.

What 亥 contributes to a chart

Behind the easy manner sits a generous branch. holds two hidden stems: Rén (Yang Water) as the main qi and Jiǎ (Yang Wood) stored within it, the seed already floating in the winter river. That stored Wood is why the Pig is a quiet beginning as much as an ending, and it powers the branch’s structural friendships. opens the Three Harmony (三合 sānhé) trio 亥卯未, the Wood frame it forms with the Rabbit and the Goat, and its Six Combination (六合 liùhé) partner is the Tiger, + producing Wood. Everything the Pig combines with grows something, which is as neat a summary of the sign as the tables allow. If your other pillars hold a , , or , your year branch is already at work with them.

The Pig in 2026

2026 is a Fire Horse year, and for the Pig the year branch forms no major structural aspect, no clash, no harm, no combination. A neutral zodiac year is an open one rather than a hard one: the annual branch is not steering, so the Pig’s 2026 will be shaped far more by its own luck pillar and monthly pillars than by the headline animal. It is a year to read from your own chart rather than the zodiac. For the shared backdrop every sign works within, see the 2026 Bing Wu Fire Horse overview.

Beyond the animal: the Pig hour and month

The branch is also a double-hour and a solar month. The Pig hour runs 21:00 to 22:59, late evening as the day winds down, and anyone born then carries in their hour pillar whatever their birth year; see the Hai hour in Ba Zi. The Pig month is the 10th solar month, beginning at Li Dong (立冬 lìdōng) around 7 November, the start of winter, covered in born in the Hai month. Closing questions on the Pig year

I was born in late January 1996. Am I a Pig or a Rat?

A Pig. The Rat year of 1996 only began at Li Chun in early February, so late-January 1996 births still belong to the Wood Pig year of 1995. This double-edged boundary is exactly why the Pig page and the Rat page both point at the same finder tool.

Which element Pig am I?

Count in sixties from the anchors above: 1995 is a Wood Pig year (1935 + 60), 2007 a Fire Pig year (1947 + 60), 2019 an Earth Pig year (1959 + 60), and 2031 will be a Metal Pig year (1971 + 60).

Is Pig or Boar the right name?

Both render ; Boar is common in Japanese-influenced sources, Pig in Chinese ones. The branch, its Water, and its chart behaviour are identical under either name.

If your birthday sits near the early-February line, confirm your true sign first with the Chinese zodiac finder, then look past the animal and plot your full four pillars free with the Ba Zi calculator.
