The Rat Hour in Ba Zi (子 23:00–00:59): Hour Pillar Meaning

The zi hour in bazi is where the day begins and, awkwardly, where the day also ends — which makes the Rat hour (子 Zǐ) both the most important and the most argued-over of the twelve. It runs 23:00–00:59, the dead of night when the world is stillest and, in the old image, the rat comes out to forage in the dark. It is deep yang Water: the quiet before anything moves.

The Rat hour (子) and its time range

Zi is the first Earthly Branch and the opening double-hour of the Chinese day. Because it straddles midnight, it is the one hour that belongs to two calendar days at once — and that split is the source of the whole late-Zi debate below. In element terms it is Water at its most concentrated: introspective, nocturnal, the mind working while the body rests.

The Rat hour pillar by day stem

The stem sitting on 子 depends on the day stem, through the Five Rats rule (五鼠遁 wǔshǔdùn). Here are all ten:

The rule behind the column is worth naming once: the Five Rats rule takes its title from this very hour — fix the stem on the Rat, and the other eleven hours simply follow in stem order. The name is a reminder that only five distinct Rat-hour pillars exist, because day stems pair up: 甲/己 share 甲子, 乙/庚 share 丙子, 丙/辛 share 戊子, 丁/壬 share 庚子, 戊/癸 share 壬子 — exactly the five rats of the rhyme, as the master hour stem table shows in full.

What being born in the Rat hour colours

The hour is the destination pillar — it speaks to children, output, ambition and the later chapters of life. A Rat-hour birth places Water at that destination, and Water there reads as depth over display: people whose real work happens privately, at night, in thought, and whose ambitions ripen late rather than announcing themselves early. The nocturnal, self-contained quality of Zi tends to describe someone who guards an inner life carefully and reveals it slowly. As always, the element interacts with the whole chart — Water at the destination is a gift to a hot chart and a burden to a cold one.

The single stem hiding in 子

For all its complications above the surface, the Rat is simple below it. Its hidden stems (藏干 cánggān) reduce to one: Guǐ 癸 (Yin Water). 子 is a pure branch — no minor qi, no stored elements, one unmixed voice in the hour palace. What that voice says depends entirely on the Day Master. For a Ding 丁 Day Master the hidden 癸 is Seven Killings 七杀: the midnight hour holds a blade, and the later years are lived under a discipline that either forges or wears. For a Bing 丙 Day Master it is Direct Officer 正官 — the gentler face of the same axis. For a Wu 戊 Day Master it is Direct Wealth 正财 at the destination; for a Jia 甲 Day Master, Direct Resource 正印, the scholar’s quiet ending; for a Ren 壬 Day Master, Rob Wealth 劫财 sharing the last chapters. Late Zi and early Zi — the convention in depth

This is the point every serious student trips over, so it is worth doing slowly. The Rat hour spans 23:00–00:59. The problem: the civil day rolls over at midnight, but the pillar day does not obviously do the same. So a birth at 23:30 sits in the Rat hour of which day — the one ending or the one beginning?

Two honest schools exist. The early-Zi / late-Zi split that this site follows treats 00:00–00:59 as ordinary “early Zi” (子時) belonging fully to the new day, and 23:00–23:59 as “late Zi” (晚子時 wǎn zǐshí): the hour pillar takes the next day stem’s Zi pillar, while the day pillar stays with the calendar day you were actually born on. So someone born at 23:40 on a Jia day keeps a Jia day pillar but takes an hour pillar built from the following day’s stem.

The competing school treats the entire 23:00–00:59 block as one unit and rolls both the day and the hour to the new day at 23:00 — no split at all. Neither is careless; they rest on different readings of when a “day” truly turns. The practical upshot is that anyone born in that 23:00–23:59 window should have their chart cast both ways and read against their actual life to see which fits. Checking a Rat hour in your chart — and what to do without a time

On a cast chart, a Rat-hour birth shows 子 as the hour branch, with the stem agreeing with your day stem’s row above — remembering that a 23:00–23:59 birth takes the next day’s stem under the site convention. Two verifications are worth running. First, solar time: near midnight even a modest correction matters, because it can move a birth not just across an hour line but across the late-Zi line, changing the hour stem while the day pillar stands. Second, the chart’s own geometry: a 午 anywhere else in the chart puts the hour in the 子↔午 clash of the Six Clashes (六冲 liùchōng), unsettling the destination palace, while 申 and 辰 elsewhere complete the 申子辰 Water frame and turn the midnight trickle into a river.

If the birth time was never recorded, the honest answer is that a Rat hour cannot be assumed — but it can be tested. Read the three known pillars first; Day Master, seasonal strength and luck cycles need no hour. Then gather what the family recalls. “Born in the middle of the night” narrows twelve branches to two or three, and the Rat’s signature is distinctive: pure Water at the destination, a private, late-ripening pattern that neighbours like the Pig hour (Water with Wood inside) and the Ox hour (Water locked in Earth) do not quite reproduce. Cast the candidates, live with them against the actual biography, and keep the one that keeps being right.
