2026 Bing Wu Year: The Monthly Pillars Table (丙午)

ember horse ink

The 2026 Bing Wu year monthly pillars in Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) divide the Fire Horse year into twelve working months, each opened not by a calendar date but by a solar term. The year stem and branch are Bǐng Wǔ (丙午), Yang Fire sitting on the Horse, and every month inside it carries its own stem-and-branch pairing. If you want to time a reading, a launch, or a luck-pillar changeover, this is the table you actually work from.

How Ba Zi months begin

A Ba Zi month does not start on the first of the Gregorian month. It starts at one of the twelve month-establishing solar terms, called jié ( jié). These are astronomical markers tied to the sun’s position, so their dates shift slightly year to year and always carry a precise time.

The year itself begins at 立春 (lìchūn), the start of spring, not at Chinese New Year. That single point is the most common source of error in charts near early February. Everything below is given in China Standard Time (CST); if you were born elsewhere, convert to CST before deciding which month pillar (月柱 yuèzhù) applies.

The 2026 Bing Wu year monthly pillars table

Each row shows the month pillar, the jié that opens it, and the exact moment that boundary falls. A birth or event before the listed time belongs to the previous month.

Why a Bing year opens on Gēng Yín

The stems in this table are not arbitrary. They come from the Five Tigers rule (五虎遁 wǔhǔ dùn), the classical formula that derives every month stem from the year stem. For a Bǐng year, the first month — the Tiger month — takes the stem Gēng, and each following month advances one stem through the cycle of ten: Gēng Yín, Xīn Mǎo, Rén Chén, and so on down the table. Once you know the year stem, the whole run of twelve is fixed.

This is why a mistake at the year boundary cascades. If a calculator assigns a birth near 立春 to the wrong year, the Five Tigers rule then hands it the wrong month stem as well, and two of the eight characters are off before any interpretation begins. The full formula for every year stem is laid out in the month stem table, and the underlying sixty-unit cycle in our guide to the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches.

Reading the pattern in the pillars

Notice the branches march in fixed order from Yín through Chǒu: Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, Rat, Ox. The year always opens on the Tiger month because the Tiger holds the first Yang Wood of spring. The stems then cycle in step, which is why the first month of a Bing year lands on Gēng.

The 2026 Bing Wu year monthly pillars also carry two Fire-heavy stretches worth flagging. The Jiǎ Wǔ month around 芒种 stacks Horse on the Fire Horse year, doubling the annual branch. The Bǐng Shēn month reintroduces Yang Fire on the Monkey, where Metal and Water start to answer the summer heat.

How to use the table with your own chart

In practice the monthly pillars serve two jobs. The first is casting: anyone born in 2026 takes their month pillar straight from this table, according to which boundary their birth moment falls between. A birth at 21:00 on 5 March 2026 sits before the 惊蛰 moment of 21:58 and therefore still belongs to the Gēng Yín month — an hour later and it would be Xīn Mǎo. The minute matters at the seams.

The second job is timing within the year. Each monthly pillar layers onto your natal chart and your current luck pillar, briefly strengthening some elements and pressing on others. A month whose branch clashes your day branch, or whose stem carries your favourable element, colours those weeks in a way a practitioner can read in advance. It is weather inside weather: the luck pillar sets the decade, the annual pillar sets the year, and these twelve set the months. None of it dictates events; it describes conditions.

Where the year ends

The final row, Xīn Chǒu at 小寒, opens in early January 2027 but still belongs to the Bing Wu year, because the year only turns over at the next 立春. The Ding Wei (丁未) year does not begin until that February boundary. So a birth in January 2027 is still read inside the Fire Horse frame, an easy detail to miss when the Gregorian year has already ticked over.

To see how these month boundaries sit among the full run of solar terms, the companion Ba Zi calendar for 2026 lays them out as key dates. And when you want to place a month pillar against a personal chart’s timing, the luck pillars concept explains how annual and monthly layers interact.

Common questions

Why do the times carry minutes? Because a solar term is a single astronomical instant, not a day. The month changes at 21:58, not “on 5 March”. Births and events on a boundary day belong to whichever side of the exact moment they fall.

Do these times apply outside China? The moments are universal, but they are stated here in China Standard Time. Convert your local birth or event time to CST before reading the table; a boundary that falls at 04:01 in Beijing is still the previous evening in most of the Americas.

Is the monthly pillar more important than the annual one? Neither outranks the other by rule. The annual pillar colours the whole year; the monthly pillar sharpens or softens it for a few weeks. In readings we treat the month as fine-grain timing inside the year’s broader climate.
