A chou month bazi birth places you in the Ox month (丑 Chǒu), the twelfth and final month of the Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) year, the tail of winter. In Ba Zi the month pillar (月柱 yuèzhù) is the season pillar, and it is the single biggest factor in how strong or weak your Day Master (日主 rìzhǔ) reads. The Ox is one of the four Earth months, and each stores a different element; the Ox is the one that stores Metal.
The Ox month opens at the solar term Xiao Han (小寒 Xiǎohán), around 5 January, not on the first of the calendar month. Ba Zi months turn on solar terms (节气 jiéqì), so an early-January birth may still belong to the Rat month, and note that the Ba Zi year has not yet turned either, since that waits for Li Chun (立春 Lìchūn) in February. Because this is the twelfth and last month, each column has walked eleven stem-steps from its Tiger opening; the pairing 甲/己, 乙/庚, 丙/辛, 丁/壬, 戊/癸 comes from the Five Tigers rule itself. Crucially, the year stem in the left column is the stem of the Ba Zi year still in progress — a January 2022 birth, for instance, sits in the Ox month of the 辛 year that began at Li Chun 2021. What the Ox month does to a chart
Chou is transitional Earth, so Earth is prosperous, but it is cold wet earth, frozen mud in the deepest part of winter. It is the coldest of the four Earth months and, set against the others, the clearest to place: the Dragon stored Water and stayed damp, the Goat stored Wood and ran hot, the Dog stored Fire and kept warm, and the Ox stores Metal (金库 jīnkù) while frozen through. That gives it a hard, chilled character. An Earth Day Master born here is rooted but numb and stiff with cold, often wanting Fire to be workable. A Metal Day Master finds a genuine root in the storehouse and reads stronger than late winter suggests. A Water Day Master still carries winter strength through the residual Water. Wood is dormant and frozen, and Fire is at its weakest, badly in need of warmth.
Because the Ox is frozen, even the Metal it stores and the Earth it offers often stay locked until Fire thaws the chart. Whether that stored Metal is usable in your case is a balance question worked through in strong versus weak Day Master and read against the five elements cycles.

Two adjustments sit on top of the grid. As the palace of career climate and of parents, an Ox-month pillar classically suggests a patient, enduring, quietly accumulating early environment: someone whose start stored value slowly and held on through hard ground. Read it as the soil your working life came from, not a fixed result. It closes the winter the Rat month ran at its coldest, and the year then turns back to the rising Wood of the Tiger month.
Working it out for a January birth
This is the month where hand counts go wrong most often, because two boundaries stack. First the month: only births after Xiao Han (~5 January) are in the Ox month at all; before it they belong to the Rat. Second the year: the entire Ox month runs before Li Chun, so the year stem is still last year’s. Li Chun 2009, for example, fell on 4 February at 00:49, so every January 2009 birth uses the 2008 year stem 戊 and reads 乙丑 for this month. Which year stem do I use if I was born in late January?
The previous calendar year’s stem, in almost every case: the Ba Zi year changes at Li Chun around 4 February, never at 1 January and never at Chinese New Year. That row choice changes your entire month pillar, so settle it first.
What opens the Metal reservoir?
The classical trigger is the 丑↔未 clash from the Six Clashes (六冲 liùchōng) list — the Goat striking the Ox. Whether the released Metal helps depends on whether your chart wants Metal, which is a full-chart judgement rather than a rule of thumb.
Is anything comfortable in an Ox month?
Water keeps its Prosperous season, Metal has a stored root, and Wood is technically Supported though frozen. The month’s real question is nearly always Fire: charts with a working Fire source thaw, and charts without one stay locked.
