What the Goat month does to a chart
Wei is transitional Earth, so Earth is prosperous, but it is hot dry earth, sun-baked and cracked rather than moist. This is the opposite of the damp Dragon: where Chen stored cool Water, the Goat stores Wood as its reservoir (木库 mùkù) and still holds real warmth from the summer just passing. That gives it a particular character. An Earth Day Master born here is strong but parched, and often wants Water to be usable. A Fire Day Master still finds hidden warmth, so it lingers stronger than the calendar suggests. A Wood Day Master is buried in the storehouse, dry kindling rather than living growth, so it has a root but a brittle one. Metal begins to firm up as autumn nears, and Water is the element most stretched, drunk up by the thirsty earth.
Keep the four Earth months apart in your mind: the Goat is hot and dry and stores Wood, the Ox is cold and wet and stores Metal. Whether the Goat’s dryness helps or hurts your chart is settled in strong versus weak Day Master and read against the five elements cycles.
Late-summer states of the five elements
By the five states (旺相休囚死 wàng xiàng xiū qiú sǐ), the Goat still sits inside the Fire season: Summer = Fire season, branches 巳午未, May 5 – Aug 6 (from Li Xia 立夏 to before Li Qiu 立秋). The summer grid therefore applies, with one Earth-month caveat below.

The caveat: classical doctrine also gives Earth its own prosperity in the four transitional months (土旺四季 tǔ wàng sìjì), strongest in late summer (未) — and the Goat is precisely that late-summer month. Check the stem against your year stem — a 丁 year gives the doubled 丁未, fire on its own hot earth, and the whole column is verifiable in the Ding-year month stem table. What does the Wood reservoir actually do?
It keeps a Yi Wood root buried in the month branch. For Wood Day Masters and Wood-hungry charts it is a stored asset rather than a living one — dry timber, not a growing tree — and practitioners watch the 丑↔未 clash from the Six Clashes (六冲 liùchōng) list as the classic trigger that knocks the storehouse open. Whether that helps or hurts is a full-chart judgement.
Is Water hopeless in a Goat month?
It has the hardest seat: Confined by season and drunk up by dry earth. But hopeless is too strong — a Water Day Master with strong Metal resource and companion Water elsewhere can still be judged workable. The month sets the difficulty, not the outcome.
