Feng Shui Bed Direction: Which Way Should You Sleep?

a shadow of a plant on a curtain

Ask which way you should sleep and you will get a compass bearing in return, usually from a stranger who has never seen your room. Real feng shui (风水 fēng shuǐ) answers the question in two layers. The first is universal and asks nothing about you: where the bed sits relative to the door and the walls. The second is personal, computed from your birth year, and is where feng shui bed direction in the strict sense belongs. Getting the order right matters, because a “lucky” heading against a wall you cannot lie along is no use at all.

Form comes before direction

Classical practice runs on two schools. Form School (峦头 luán tóu) reads the shape of a space and the flow of qi (气 qì) through it. Compass School (理气 lǐ qì) uses the luopan (罗盘 luó pán) and formulas tied to direction and time. A full reading uses both, but they are not equal partners for a bed. Form sets the constraints; direction fine-tunes within them.

So before you think about which way your head points, the bed has to earn its place in the room. That is the commanding position (命位 mìng wèi): you can see the bedroom door from the bed without lying directly in line with it, ideally set diagonally across the room, with the headboard against a solid wall and not floating under a window. This is Form School, it needs no calculation, and it resolves most of what people are really asking when they search for the right sleeping direction. Our companion piece on feng shui bed placement and position works through this in detail, and the room-by-room bedroom guide sets it in context.

Only once the bed sits well does direction become the refining question: given a few workable spots, which one lets your head point somewhere favourable.

>The Kua number and the Ba Zhai system

Personalised direction in feng shui comes from Ba Zhai (八宅 bā zhái), the Eight Mansions method. It assigns each person a Kua number (本命卦 běn mìng guà) from 1 to 9, derived from birth year and sex. The birth year here is the solar year, with the boundary near Li Chun (立春 lì chūn) around 4 February, the same cut-off Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) uses, so a January or early-February birth may belong to the previous year.

Your Kua number sorts you into one of two groups, and the group is what fixes your favourable headings:

Group Kua numbers Favourable directions
East group (东四命 dōng sì mìng) 1, 3, 4, 9 East, Southeast, South, North
West group (西四命 xī sì mìng) 2, 6, 7, 8 West, Northwest, Northeast, Southwest

The logic is elemental. The East group’s directions carry Wood and Water and the Fire they feed, elements that sit together in the productive cycle Wood to Fire and Water to Wood. The West group’s directions carry Metal and Earth, again a productive pairing, Earth to Metal. If you want the grounding under those relationships, our note on the five elements in Ba Zi lays out the cycles the whole system rests on.

One point of honesty: the exact birth-year to Kua formula differs for births before and after 2000 and by sex, and the number 5, which has no palace of its own, maps to 2 for men and 8 for women. Because that computation is deterministic and easy to get subtly wrong, we do not hand-derive it in an article. Find your Kua from a tool that computes it properly rather than trusting a printed shortcut.

The four auspicious direction types

Within your group the four favourable directions are not interchangeable. Each carries a quality, and this is where feng shui bed direction becomes a matter of intention rather than a single “best” bearing. The four auspicious types are:

  • Sheng Qi (生气 shēng qì) — generating breath, associated with drive, momentum and success.
  • Tian Yi (天医 tiān yī) — the heavenly doctor, associated with health, rest and recovery. Often the first choice for a bed.
  • Yan Nian (延年 yán nián) — longevity, associated with relationships and stability of bonds.
  • Fu Wei (伏位 fú wèi) — the seated position, associated with steadiness, clarity and peace of mind.

The four unfavourable types (祸害 huò hài, 六煞 liù shà, 五鬼 wǔ guǐ, 绝命 jué mìng) are the ones you steer the head away from. For a bedroom, many practitioners lean toward Tian Yi for its restfulness, or Fu Wei for stability, over the more activating Sheng Qi, on the reasoning that a bed is for recovery rather than ambition. Schools differ on the emphasis, and that is a genuine, not a marketing, disagreement.

Which way the head actually points

The classical application is simple to state: sleep with the crown of your head pointing toward one of your four auspicious directions. It is the head, not the feet, that is oriented, since that is where the sleeping person receives qi. Match one of your favourable headings to a spot the bed can genuinely occupy in the commanding position, and you have both layers satisfied.

When they conflict, Form wins. A bed shoved into line with the door, or floating under a window, to chase a favourable bearing is worse feng shui than a solidly placed bed pointing at a merely neutral direction. Direction is the adjustment you make among good options, not a rule that overrides a poorly placed bed. If two placements are equally sound in Form terms, let your Kua break the tie.

A note on scope: Ba Zhai is one system. Xuan Kong Flying Stars (玄空飞星 xuán kōng fēi xīng) reads a home’s directions through time rather than through the sleeper, and can point elsewhere. Where the two disagree, that is consultation territory, not something to settle from a chart of averages.

Finding your own directions

Because the Kua number turns entirely on birth year and sex, and the group determines everything downstream, the personalised part of feng shui bed direction is a small deterministic calculation, not a matter of taste. Feng shui is Ba Zi’s spatial sibling, and the same birth data that plots your chart also yields your Kua. Plot your details with the free Ba Zi calculator to establish the birth year and element balance, then use your Kua group to choose which favourable heading your bed can honestly point toward. For a whole-home reading, where Form, Ba Zhai and Flying Stars are weighed together against your actual floor plan, that is a working session rather than a lookup.
