A 壬 year is unusual in opening on its own stem 壬 in the Tiger month, and it lands on 壬子 in the Rat month, a doubly watery pillar in deep winter. That layout is the signature of the Rén column — the same one a 丁 year uses.
A worked example
Take a birth in the Horse month (午 Wǔ) of a 壬 year. The fifth row gives 丙午 (Bǐng Wǔ) — a 丙 fire stem over a 午 fire branch, the most concentrated fire pillar in the cycle, sitting inside a water year. The Horse month opens at Mang Zhong (芒种 mángzhòng) around 6 June, so a birth on 4 June of that year has not yet entered the Horse and still belongs to the Snake month, giving 乙巳 (Yǐ Sì). Which years belong to this column
Calendar years ending in 2 carry the 壬 stem: 1992, 2002, 2012, 2022. The Li Chun boundary governs as always — the Ba Zi year turns at the solar term around 4 February, so a January 2022 birth still belongs to the 2021 辛 year and reads from the Xin-year column. Once Li Chun 2022 passed, the year opened on this table’s 壬寅 first month — the doubled Water-on-Tiger pillar that gave 2022 its Water Tiger name. What the month pillar governs
The month pillar houses the month palace, read first for career climate and for the relationship with parents and elders. Its structural weight is larger still, because the month branch holds the season’s ruling element and the season sets the chart’s baseline temperature. That is why the month branch is decisive when we judge a strong or weak Day Master — a Day Master born in its own season begins with real backing. Why does the 壬 year open on its own stem?
It falls straight out of the formula: first-month (寅) stem index = (year-stem-index mod 5) × 2 + 2; each later month adds 1, mod 10. Year stems pair: 甲/己, 乙/庚, 丙/辛, 丁/壬, 戊/癸 share columns. With 甲 numbered 0, 壬 is 8; 8 mod 5 is 3, and (3 × 2) + 2 = 8 — the index of 壬 itself. It is the only pairing where the computed opening stem equals one of the pair’s own stems.
Does the 壬寅 month make every Ren-year chart watery?
No — only births inside that first month carry 壬寅 as their month pillar. A 壬-year birth in the 丙午 Horse month has one of the most fire-heavy month pillars in the cycle. The year stem sets the column; the birth month picks the row.
