Hidden Stems in the Si Branch (巳): What the Snake Conceals

In a Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) chart, the Si branch (巳 sì, the Snake) looks like a Fire branch, and it is — but it is not only Fire. Its Hidden Stems (藏干 cánggān) layer three qi that, at first glance, seem to have little to do with one another: Fire on top, then Earth, then Metal. That combination puzzles beginners and rewards anyone who reads it properly. Understanding the Si branch hidden stems means seeing how a single branch can be a Fire engine, an Earth support, and the birthplace of Metal all at once.

Si is the first month of summer, the point where Fire is rising toward its peak. That is its public face. The other two stems explain its quieter, more strategic behaviour in a chart.

The Si branch hidden stems: three layers

Here is what the Snake conceals, in order, exactly as the reference tables set it out.

The main qi is Bǐng 丙 (Yang Fire), the blazing, outward Fire of the sun. Behind it sit two residual qi: Wù 戊 (Yang Earth), the Earth that Fire naturally produces, and Gēng 庚 (Yang Metal). Notice that every stem here is yang — Si is an unambiguously assertive, outward branch.

Why Metal hides inside a Fire branch

The Gēng 庚 (Yang Metal) inside Si surprises people. Fire melts Metal, so why does Metal live here? The answer is the concept of the “birth” position (长生 chángshēng). In the classical cycle, Metal is born in Si. The Snake is where Metal’s life begins as a faint seed, long before it matures in the autumn branches. So Si holds Metal not as strong, finished Metal, but as Metal at its origin — present, real, and able to grow if the chart later reinforces it.

This is exactly what residual qi means in practice. The Gēng 庚 is not doing heavy lifting while it sits quietly in Si. But it is genuinely there, and it explains the Three Harmony frame Sì 巳, Yǒu 酉 and Chǒu 丑, which combine into a Metal frame (巳酉丑). When that frame forms, the Metal seed hidden in the Snake is drawn out and the branch’s allegiance shifts toward Metal. A branch that read as Fire can, in the right company, feed a Metal outcome.

Main qi versus residual qi in the Snake

At rest, you read Si as its main qi: Bǐng 丙 (Yang Fire). When you weigh how the Snake heats a chart, supports a weak Fire Day Master, or pressures a Metal one, it is Fire you are counting. The Wù 戊 (Yang Earth) residual gives Si a grounded, productive quality — Fire that leaves warm Earth behind it — and it means Si can quietly act as an Earth support in charts that need it.

The Gēng 庚 (Yang Metal) residual is the strategic reserve. It usually stays dormant, but a Metal Three Harmony frame or a strong Metal luck pillar can activate it. This is why two charts with a Si in the same position can behave differently: one has the company to wake the Metal, the other does not.

Rooting (通根 tōnggēn) follows the same hierarchy. Si gives fire stems a full main-qi root — a Bǐng Day Master standing on a Snake is planted in its own element — while earth stems take a middling root and metal stems only the faint birth-stage footing. In a strength judgement, fire rooted in Si counts heavily; metal “rooted” in Si barely counts at all until the frame wakes it. What the Snake’s layers change in a reading

Because Si carries three stems, it can conceal three different Ten Gods (十神 shíshén) relative to the Day Master. The assignment is mechanical: each hidden stem is compared, element and polarity, against your day stem, so the Snake’s cast of stars is different for each of the ten Day Masters. For a Rén 壬 (Yang Water) Day Master, Si hides Indirect Wealth in its Bǐng 丙 Fire, Seven Killings in its Wù 戊 Earth, and Indirect Resource in its Gēng 庚 Metal — wealth, pressure and support folded into one branch. The practitioner’s job is to know which of those is active now and which is waiting on a frame or a clash. Hand the same Snake to a Xīn 辛 (Yin Metal) Day Master and it reads instead as Direct Officer (正官) over Direct Resource (正印) with Rob Wealth (劫财) at the bottom — authority and backing on the surface, a competitor buried underneath.

Si clashes with Hài 亥 (Pig), Fire against Water — the Snake-Pig clash. As with any multi-qi branch, a clash disturbs the whole vault, not just the surface Fire, so the reading has to account for what the disturbance does to the hidden Earth and Metal as well. This is the layer of detail that separates a flat reading from an accurate one. Two further relations matter: Sì and Shēn combine (巳申) toward Water, and the Snake forms a harm with the Tiger (寅巳害) — friction between the two birth branches of Fire.

The Snake palace by palace

In the year branch, Si’s rising Fire colours family background and the opening decade. In the month it is the summer gate: a chart born in the Si month starts with Fire ascendant, which anchors every strength call that follows. In the day branch the Snake is the spouse palace, where its three-layer contents give the marriage reading unusual depth — surface warmth with buried practicality and edge. In the hour pillar, the Si hour (late morning) seats that layered Fire in the palace of children and later life.
