Set your Day Master (日主 rìzhǔ) to Wù 戊 and the Ten Gods (十神 shíshén) resolve into a specific map. Wù is yang earth — the mountain, the dam, the high ground that does not move for weather. Each heavenly stem is set against a Wù Day Master. The label comes from the element relationship plus polarity: matching charge gives the looser “indirect” bond, opposing charge the “direct” one.

Resource: Fire warms the mountain

Fire produces earth, so the fire stems feed Wù. Dīng 丁, the yin lamp-flame, is the Direct Resource (正印 zhèngyìn) — the patient, steady warmth that makes soil fertile: schooling, mentors, a clear line of support. Bǐng 丙, the yang sun, is the Indirect Resource (偏印 piānyìn), broader and less predictable: sudden insight, unorthodox learning, or the kind of backer who appears once and changes everything. For a mountain that has gone cold and hard, these fire stems are what make it habitable ground again.

Companions: Wu and Ji

Earth meeting earth is the companion group. Another Wù is the Friend (比肩 bǐjiān), a second ridge on the same range — allies of equal weight, shared ground. Yin Jǐ 己 earth is Rob Wealth (劫财 jiécái); it is still earth, still support, but softer and inclined to help itself to the resources you were saving. For a weak Wù these companions add mass and hold; for an already-heavy Wù they crowd out the wealth and officer the chart needs.

Output: Geng and Xin metal

Earth produces metal, so metal is how Wù expresses itself. Gēng 庚 yang metal is the Eating God (食神 shíshén) — sustained, well-formed output; the ore the mountain yields slowly and cleanly. Xīn 辛 yin metal is the Hurting Officer (伤官 shāngguān), sharper and more brilliant: quick wit, cutting talent, the flair that draws attention and occasionally trouble. In a Wù chart the metal stems are where a very solid person becomes visible and productive rather than merely stable.

Wealth: Ren and Gui water

Earth controls water, so water is what Wù governs and therefore its wealth. The mountain banks and channels the river. Guǐ 癸 yin water is the Direct Wealth (正财 zhèngcái), the dependable income and the asset you can point to; Rén 壬 yang water is the Indirect Wealth (偏财 piāncái), the large flowing kind — ventures, markets, opportunistic gains that come in surges. A strong Wù that can hold a wide river is the picture of someone who manages real capital; a weak one is a dam under pressure it cannot contain.

Officer: Jia and Yi wood

Wood controls earth — roots break ground — so wood is Wù’s officer and pressure. Yǐ 乙 yin wood is the Direct Officer (正官 zhèngguān): legitimate structure, rules and responsibilities the mountain accepts. Jiǎ 甲 yang wood is Seven Killings (七杀 qīshā), the harder pressure of rivals, blunt authority and demands that arrive without asking. Wù is stubborn enough to withstand a great deal of officer, which is why disciplined Wù charts often thrive under exactly the pressure that would crack a softer Day Master.

Position changes the verdict

Where each god stands is as telling as what it is. The day branch — the spouse palace — is read through its hidden stems, and two Wù day pillars make the point neatly. A Wù Zǐ day keeps Guǐ, the Direct Wealth and classical wife star, as the main qi of Zǐ 子, seated in the marriage palace itself; the classics also note that Wù and Guǐ form a stem combination, so this wealth binds unusually close to the self. A Wù Yín day instead holds Jiǎ inside Yín 寅 — Seven Killings in the spouse palace, pressure living at close quarters, which a strong mountain carries and a thin one feels. Elsewhere, Bǐng Indirect Resource on the month pillar marks unorthodox backing through the formative years, and a Gēng Eating God on the hour — the palace of output and later life — is the ore that surfaces in the closing decades.

Questions Wu charts raise

The mountain too heavy — what drains it? For a strong Wù the classic relief valves are its metal output and water wealth, the elements that give mass a job; more fire or earth only adds weight. Is Seven Killings dangerous for Wù? Less than for most stems — as noted above, Wù withstands officer pressure unusually well, and many disciplined Wù charts are built on exactly that Jiǎ. And if there is no water anywhere? Wealth is not cancelled; it can hide in the branches or arrive with a luck pillar that carries Rén or Guǐ in for a decade.
