The wu lou is the bottle gourd, and it is one of the quieter objects in feng shui. In Mandarin it is 葫芦 húlu; “wu lou” is the Cantonese reading, which is the name most people in Singapore and Malaysia know it by. It carries a long thread of symbolism around health and long life, and it has one specific, traditional job in flying-star practice.
This page sets out what the gourd stands for, where the custom places it in 2026 and 2027, and what it is not.
The gourd and its symbolism
A dried bottle gourd is a natural container: hard-shelled, light, with a narrow neck and two rounded chambers. In Chinese tradition it became a symbol of health and longevity, and of something kept safely inside.
The name helps. 葫芦 húlu is close in sound to 福禄 fú lù, “blessing and prosperity”, and in Chinese symbolism a near-homophone is often enough for an object to carry the meaning of the words it echoes. That is why the gourd shape turns up in carvings, on pendants and in decorative motifs. It is a visual pun as much as an object.
Li Tieguai and the gourd of medicine
The best-known gourd in Chinese lore belongs to 李铁拐 Lǐ Tiěguǎi, one of the Eight Immortals (八仙 bāxiān), who carries a gourd of medicine. The image ties the gourd to healing in the popular imagination, and much of the wu lou’s health symbolism flows from that association.
It is worth reading the story as it is meant: as a figure from a tradition, giving the object its meaning. That meaning is real in the sense that it shapes how people use and value the gourd. It is not a property of the gourd itself.
The wu lou in flying-star practice
In flying star feng shui nine stars move through the nine palaces of a building year by year. Two of them are Earth stars with a difficult reputation. The 2 star, 二黑 èr hēi or Jù Mén 巨门, is called the sickness star and is associated with illness and worry. The 5 star, 五黄 wǔ huáng or Lián Zhēn 廉贞, is described as the year’s most difficult star.
The traditional remedy for both rests on the five-element cycle: Metal drains Earth. The element logic is the same one we use in Ba Zi, set out on our page on the five elements. A brass wu lou is metal in a shape that already means health, so it became the traditional object for the sector of the annual 2 star.
Where the 2 star sits in 2026 and 2027
The annual chart changes at Li Chun (立春 lìchūn), the start of spring in the solar calendar, not on 1 January.
| Year | From | Star 2 (sickness star) | Star 5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 丙午 | Li Chun 2026-02-04 04:01 | Northwest | South |
| 2027 丁未 | Li Chun 2027-02-04 09:45 | West | North |
So for the rest of the 2026 solar year, the custom puts a brass wu lou in the Northwest. From Li Chun 2027 the 2 star moves to the West, and households that follow the practice move the gourd with it. The 5 star sector also calls for Metal in the traditional reading; the full 2027 map and what tradition does in each sector are on the 2027 flying stars page.
The same tradition also asks that the 2 star sector be kept calm and still. In practice, that part of the custom often matters more than the object.
Natural gourd or brass wu lou
Both are used. A natural dried gourd keeps closest to the original symbol, the gourd of medicine and the plant itself. A brass wu lou carries the same shape in metal, which is why it is the form used for the 2 star sector, where the Metal element is the point.
Some households also keep a wu lou near a sickbed, as a sign of care and a wish for recovery. Placement customs beyond the 2 star sector vary from house to house and master to master, and schools differ on the finer points.
What a wu lou is not
A wu lou is not medical treatment. If you or someone at home is unwell, see a doctor; a gourd on the shelf is no substitute for that. What the object can do is hold an intention: a reminder that a part of the home is being looked after, or that someone is being cared for. Tradition gives it that meaning, and that is a fair thing to value.
The same honesty applies to the stars. A flying-star map describes the year’s weather across a building; the people living there and their own charts decide much of what happens. Like the pixiu, the gourd carries tradition, not outcomes.
The annual stars map the house; your Ba Zi chart shows which elements you yourself lean toward, Metal included. Find your own elemental balance in your chart: plot it free with the Ba Zi calculator.
