Zodiac Years

Year of the Monkey (申): Years, Personality, Elements and 2026

cogs and gears

The Year of the Monkey is the ninth sign and the first of the two Metal animals, the clever one that opens autumn. The Monkey is the Earthly Branch shēn, yang Metal, bright and quick-moving. If you were born in a Monkey year you carry the sign classical writers link with inventiveness, wit, and a restless intelligence that solves problems by going around them.

Which years are Monkey years?

These are the Monkey years across the modern span, each beginning at that year’s exact Li Chun (立春 lìchūn), around 4 February. Not 1 January, and not Chinese New Year:

The usual caution holds: a birthday in late January or the opening days of February can belong to the previous animal, the Goat, until Li Chun turns the year. When the date is near the boundary, the calendar year alone will mislead you. Check it against the exact solar term with the Chinese zodiac finder, or scan the full 1930–2035 table in the zodiac years chart.

The Monkey personality

The classical Monkey is inventive, agile, and mentally quick. It thrives on novelty, enjoys a puzzle for its own sake, and finds the sideways solution while others queue for the front door. As yang Metal it is sharp and versatile, which reads as brilliance and, unchecked, as a habit of cutting corners or losing interest once the interesting part is solved. Monkeys are sociable, funny, and persuasive, and they rarely stay still for long.

Read it as texture rather than fate. We work from charts here, not fortunes, and the Monkey is only your year branch, one of the eight characters in a full Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) chart. A steady Day Master can give a Monkey the patience to finish what its cleverness starts. The animal names the raw wit; the reading shows how it is governed. Start at the Ba Zi hub, or place the Monkey on the full wheel at the 12 zodiac animals hub.

The Monkey is the trickster of the wheel, and like every good trickster it is smarter than the people who underestimate it. Its yang Metal is bright, mobile, and precise, the mind that takes a machine apart just to see how it works. In a working reading the Monkey’s strength is problem-solving under constraint: give it a locked door and it finds the window, the vent, or a reason the door was never needed. The blind spot is restlessness and a certain slipperiness. A Monkey can outsmart itself, changing course so often that nothing compounds, or use its wit to wriggle out of commitments rather than keep them. Its discipline is depth, staying with one thing long enough for the cleverness to pay off.

The five kinds of Monkey

Across a sixty-year cycle the Monkey appears in each element once, and the year stem shapes its cleverness:

  • Water Monkey (1932 and every 60 years): fluid and persuasive, wit that works through people.
  • Wood Monkey (1944 and every 60 years): more constructive and cooperative, cleverness with a plan.
  • Fire Monkey (1956 and every 60 years): energetic and bold, the showman Monkey.
  • Earth Monkey (1968 and every 60 years): grounded and practical, invention put to use.
  • Metal Monkey (1980 and every 60 years): the sharpest and most incisive, quick and cutting.

The toolkit inside 申

Open the branch and the trickster turns out to be well equipped. carries three hidden stems: Gēng (Yang Metal) as the main qi, with Rén (Yang Water) and Wù (Yang Earth) stored alongside. Blade, river, and mountain in one character, which is a fair inventory for a sign that improvises its way through anything. The Water inside also drives its structural alliances: it opens the Three Harmony (三合 sānhé) trio 申子辰, the Water frame it forms with the Rat and the Dragon, and its Six Combination (六合 liùhé) partner is the Snake, + producing Water. These fixed lists are what a reader actually consults before saying who the Monkey “gets along with”, and they apply between any two branches in any pillars, not just birth years.

The Monkey in 2026

2026 is a Fire Horse year, and for the Monkey the year branch forms no major structural aspect, no clash, no harm, no combination. A neutral zodiac year is not a blank one; it means the annual branch is not pulling in any particular direction, so the Monkey’s 2026 will be shaped mainly by its own luck pillar and monthly pillars rather than by the headline animal. It is a year to steer by your own chart. For the shared backdrop every sign works within, see the 2026 Bing Wu Fire Horse overview.

Beyond the animal: the Monkey hour and month

The branch is also a double-hour and a solar month. The Monkey hour runs 15:00 to 16:59, mid-afternoon, and anyone born then carries in their hour pillar whatever their birth year; see the Shen hour in Ba Zi. The Monkey month is the 7th solar month, beginning at Li Qiu (立秋 lìqiū) around 7 August, the start of autumn, covered in born in the Shen month. Quick answers for Monkey years

Is a January 1992 birthday a Monkey?

No. Until Li Chun arrived in early February 1992, the year still belonged to the Goat of 1991. The same logic applies to every January and early-February birthday; the finder tool checks the exact boundary for you.

How do I work out my element of Monkey?

Add sixty to the anchor years above until you reach yours: 1992 is a Water Monkey year (1932 + 60), 2004 a Wood Monkey year (1944 + 60), 2016 a Fire Monkey year (1956 + 60), and 2028 will be an Earth Monkey year (1968 + 60).

The descriptions say clever but unreliable. Is that my fate?

No description of one character out of eight can be. Plenty of Monkey-year charts are models of persistence because the Day Master, month, and hour supply the anchoring the year branch does not. That is why the chart, not the animal, is the unit we read.

If your birthday sits near the early-February line, confirm your true sign first with the Chinese zodiac finder, then look past the animal and plot your full four pillars free with the Ba Zi calculator.
