Hidden Stems in the You Branch (酉): What the Rooster Conceals

polished blade dark

The Rooster is the clean, concentrated branch of the autumn metals, and it hides almost nothing. The bazi You branch hidden stems come down to a single line: one stem, one element, no reserves. That purity is exactly why the You branch reads so directly, and why practitioners use it as a yardstick for how a chart handles refined metal.

Every Earthly Branch (地支 dìzhī) conceals one or more hidden stems (藏干 cánggān), the Heavenly Stems (天干 tiāngān) folded inside it. Most branches hold two or three. You holds one, which makes it a good place to see what the main qi (本气 běnqì) does when it has the branch to itself.

The You branch hidden stems table

Branch Hidden stem Element Role
Yǒu (Rooster) Xīn Yin Metal Main qi (本气 běnqì)

That is the entire list of bazi You branch hidden stems. The Rooster conceals only Xīn , yin metal, with no secondary or residual stem beneath it. When You appears in any of the four positions, you can read its metal at face value, because the branch is not diluting itself with a second flavour.

What a pure single-qi branch means

Astronomically this matches the season. You is the heart of mid-autumn, the point where metal is at its most complete and least mixed, the same way Zi is pure winter water and Mao is pure spring wood. A single-qi branch is not a gap in the bookkeeping; it is the branch behaving exactly like the season it names.

Practically, whatever Ten God (十神 shíshén) Xin carries for your Day Master (日主 rìzhǔ) lands with full weight. There is no competing star inside the branch to soften it. In a strength judgement, You contributes clean metal and nothing else, and you never have to ask whether a buried stem might be released later, as you do with the mixed branches like the Dog or the Ox.

One stem, ten possible stars

The mechanism is worth spelling out, because it is the whole engine of hidden-stem reading: a Ten God is not a property of the branch, it is a comparison. You set the hidden stem’s element and polarity against your own Day Master, and the relationship names the star. The Rooster’s single Xīn therefore forms exactly one god per chart — but a different one for each of the ten Day Masters. For a Jiǎ 甲 (Yang Wood) Day Master, Xīn is the Direct Officer (正官 zhèngguān): a Rooster in that chart quietly seats rules, rank and accountability. For a Dīng 丁 (Yin Fire) Day Master, the same Xīn is the Indirect Wealth (偏财 piāncái), and the branch becomes opportunity and fluid money instead. Same branch, different chart, different life area — which is why the first step with any Rooster is always your own day stem, checked against the ten gods table for every Day Master.

Xin Metal, refined and exacting

Xin is yin metal, the jewel, the blade and the fine instrument rather than the raw ore of Gēng Yang Metal. It is precise and unforgiving, and it prizes clarity. In a chart, a strong You branch tends to sharpen judgement and standards wherever its Ten God falls.

Because the metal is pure, You is also sensitive to fire and to water. Fire that is too strong pressures the refined metal directly, while clean water polishes and expresses it. Those interactions come from the surrounding stems, not from inside the branch, which is what makes You so readable.

For rooting (通根 tōnggēn), the Rooster is metal’s home ground. A visible Xīn stem — above all a Xīn Day Master — standing over a You branch has the strongest root the element offers, and even a Gēng stem takes solid footing here. Metal stems with no You, Shen or storehouse beneath them float, and a floating stem is the first thing to give way under a hostile luck pillar. This is why the Rooster features so heavily in strength verdicts for metal charts.

What activates and disturbs You

A single-qi branch is stable but not untouchable. You meets its clash in the Rabbit, the Mǎo–Yǒu clash (卯酉冲), a metal–wood opposition that shakes whatever palace the Rooster occupies. You combines with the Dragon, since Chén and Yǒu combine (辰酉) toward Metal, which can bind the branch into a metal role, and it forms a harm with the Dog (酉戌).

You is also the central leg of the Sì–Yǒu–Chǒu (巳酉丑) three-harmony metal frame. When the Snake and Ox join it across a chart or a luck pillar, the metal strengthens well beyond what one branch would suggest. So even a pure branch has to be read in company. You can line the Rooster up against the busier branches in our complete hidden stems chart.

The Rooster in the four palaces

Palace position tells you what the metal cuts. In the year branch, You’s exacting quality colours ancestry and the early environment. In the month it rules the season: a chart born in the You month opens at metal’s peak, which anchors the strength reading for every Day Master. In the day branch the Rooster is the spouse palace, and its single unambiguous star gives the marriage dynamic one clear keynote — with the Rabbit clash the classic disturbance to watch for in years and luck pillars. In the hour pillar, the You hour (early evening) seats that refined metal in the palace of children and later life.

Finding it in your own chart is quick precisely because the branch is pure: locate 酉 among your four branches, note the palace, convert Xīn into its star for your Day Master, then check the company — Rabbit for the clash, Dragon for the combination, Dog for the harm, Snake and Ox for the frame.

Where the hidden stems fit the bigger picture

Hidden stems are one layer of the twenty-two character alphabet. The primer on the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches lays out how surface and buried characters work together. The neighbouring Shen branch hidden stems make a useful contrast, since the Monkey is mixed metal where the Rooster is pure. If the Day Master itself is Xin Metal, the Xin Metal Day Master profile shows what a rooted Rooster does for it.
