The Geng Zi day pillar (庚子 gēng zǐ) sets Yang Metal (庚 gēng) over the Rat branch (子 zǐ), a pure Water branch. Geng is raw, hard Metal — ore, the axe head, the unrefined blade. Zi is clear, cold Water. Since Metal gives birth to Water in the productive cycle, the day pillar (日柱 rìzhù) image is a blade rinsed under a running spring: the Metal sits directly on what it produces, and comes up clean, bright and edged.
This is why the classics call Geng Zi a “washed metal” pillar. The Water below does not fight the Metal — it polishes it. And because that Water is the Metal’s output, the whole pillar leans toward expression.

Geng Metal on its own is decisive, blunt and action-oriented — the Day Master that cuts rather than negotiates. What sharpens the Geng Zi person is what they sit on: Hurting Officer (伤官 shāngguān), the main qi of the Zi branch being Guǐ 癸 Water.
Hurting Officer is the star of brilliance, performance and unruly talent. Sitting directly on it, a Geng Zi person tends to be quick, articulate and unusually clever — often gifted with words, critique, design or craft. They think fast and say what they see. Where plain Geng is a hammer, Geng Zi is a scalpel.
That same current makes them impatient with dull authority. Hurting Officer resents being managed for its own sake, so these people bristle at empty hierarchy and shine when given room to do things their own way. Zǐ is clashed by Wǔ 午 (the Horse) in the Six Clashes (六冲 liùchōng) — for this pillar, literally the refining Fire striking the expressive Water — so Horse years tend to pit duty against talent and put relationships under the same spotlight. Zǐ combines with Chǒu 丑 (the Ox) toward Earth in the Six Combinations (六合 liùhé), quietening the current, and completes the Water frame (三合 sānhé) with Shēn 申 and Chén 辰.
