I Ching Numbers (易经数字): Phone Number Energy, Explained

“I Ching numbers”, 易经数字 (yìjīng shùzì), is a popular way of reading phone numbers, car plates and unit numbers in Singapore and Malaysia. It is also sold as number energy, 数字能量学. A practitioner splits the number into pairs of digits, gives each pair one of eight “stars”, and judges the number lucky or unlucky by which stars dominate.

We are asked about it often, so here is a plain account: how the system works, the full table it uses, where it actually comes from, and why we do not sell number readings ourselves.

How the system reads a number

Each digit from 1 to 9 except 5 stands for one of the eight trigrams in the Luo Shu square: 1 is Kan, 2 is Kun, 3 is Zhen, 4 is Xun, 6 is Qian, 7 is Dui, 8 is Gen and 9 is Li. Two neighbouring digits therefore form a pair of trigrams, and the pair is given the star that Eight Mansions feng shui assigns to that pair.

A phone number is read in overlapping pairs. The number 9131 6888, for example, is read as 91, 13, 31, 16, 68, 88, 88. Then the stars are counted and weighed, usually with more weight on the last few digits.

Most versions treat 0 and 5 differently. Zero is said to hide or weaken the star around it, and five to strengthen it. Schools disagree on the details here more than anywhere else.

The eight stars table

Pairs work in either order, so 13 and 31 are the same star.

Star Digit pairs What the system says it brings
天医 Tiān Yī, Heavenly Doctor 13, 68, 49, 27 Wealth, kindness, health
生气 Shēng Qì, Vitality 14, 67, 39, 28 Energy, optimism, help from others
延年 Yán Nián, Longevity 19, 78, 34, 26 Steadiness, leadership, lasting relationships
伏位 Fú Wèi, Stability 11, 22, 33, 44, 66, 77, 88, 99 Patience, holding position
绝命 Jué Mìng, Severed Life 12, 69, 48, 37 Risk-taking, impulsiveness
五鬼 Wǔ Guǐ, Five Ghosts 18, 79, 36, 24 Cleverness, volatility
六煞 Liù Shà, Six Killings 16, 47, 38, 29 Emotional entanglement
祸害 Huò Hài, Mishap 17, 89, 46, 23 Quarrels, trouble through speech

The table is internally tidy: every pair of the eight digits appears in exactly one row. That tidiness comes from its source, which is the next point.

Where it really comes from

Despite the name, these readings are not in the I Ching. The Book of Changes is a text of sixty-four hexagrams and their judgments, explained in our guide to the I Ching. It says nothing about phone numbers.

The eight stars come from Eight Mansions feng shui (八宅), a classical school that pairs a person’s trigram with the eight directions of a house. It is the system behind your Kua number and its four good directions. In Eight Mansions, a Kan person’s Heavenly Doctor direction is Zhen, which is why 1 and 3 together make Heavenly Doctor here.

Number energy takes those star names and applies them to strings of digits, through the Luo Shu numbers of the eight trigrams. As far as we can tell it is a modern system, popular in Taiwan and then Malaysia and Singapore over roughly the last twenty years. No classical text applies the eight stars to numbers this way.

Why we keep it in proportion

We have three reasons for not treating number energy as feng shui.

  • It drops the person. In Eight Mansions, a star is good or bad relative to a particular person’s trigram. Number energy gives every reader the same verdict for the same number, which the source system never did.
  • It drops the place. Eight Mansions is about directions in a building. A phone number has no direction.
  • It invites anxiety. Telling someone their number carries Severed Life or Five Ghosts, and that a new number is the fix, is exactly the kind of fear-selling we avoid.

The older habits around numbers are simpler and kinder: people like 8 because it sounds like prosper and avoid 4 because it sounds like death. Our page on feng shui numbers covers those sound-based meanings, which is what most families actually mean by a lucky number.

If you already use it

If you enjoy choosing a number this way, there is little harm in it. A number you like is a small pleasure each time you read it out. Just keep it in proportion. A phone number will not change your health, your marriage or your income, and nobody needs to pay to replace one.

If what you really want to know is how the coming years look for you, that is what a chart reads. In a Ba Zi reading we spend an hour on your chart and luck pillars, with a written summary afterwards. No fear-selling, and no new phone number required.
