Luck Pillar Direction: Forward or Backward Through the Cycle

brass compass antique

Before you can list anyone’s luck pillars (大运 dàyùn), you have to know which way they run. The bazi da yun direction decides whether the sequence steps forward or backward through the sixty cycle, and it is fixed at birth by two facts alone: the polarity of the year stem, and the gender of the chart. Get the direction wrong and every pillar after it is wrong, so this is the first thing to settle.

The rule that sets bazi da yun direction

The direction depends on pairing the year stem’s yin or yang nature with the chart’s gender. The rule is: a yang year stem with a male chart runs forward through the sixty cycle from the month pillar; a yin year stem with a male chart runs backward. For females, the direction reverses in both cases.

Year stem polarity Gender Direction
Yang stem Male Forward
Yang stem Female Backward
Yin stem Male Backward
Yin stem Female Forward

The yang stems are Jiǎ 甲, Bǐng 丙, Wù 戊, Gēng 庚 and Rén 壬. The yin stems are Yǐ 乙, Dīng 丁, Jǐ 己, Xīn 辛 and Guǐ 癸. Only the year stem matters here, not the day master.

Notice what the table implies: a man and a woman born in the same year always walk opposite roads, and the same person’s road would flip if the neighbouring year had carried the other polarity. Since yang and yin stems alternate year by year through the cycle, direction is close to a coin that the calendar and the birth certificate flip together.

Forward and backward from the month pillar

The luck pillars are drawn from the month pillar (月柱 yuèzhù), not the year or day. Forward means you step to the next pillar in the sixty-cycle (六十甲子 liùshí jiǎzǐ) sequence after your month pillar; backward means you step to the one before it. From there you keep moving in the same direction, one pillar every ten years.

So a forward chart with a month pillar of, say, Gēng Yín 庚寅 takes Xīn Mǎo 辛卯 as its first luck pillar. A backward chart with the same month pillar takes Jǐ Chǒu 己丑 instead. Same birth month, opposite roads.

Follow both roads out a few decades and the difference compounds. The forward chart walks Xīn Mǎo, then Rén Chén 壬辰, then Guǐ Sì 癸巳, moving with the seasons of the cycle. The backward chart walks Jǐ Chǒu, then Wù Zǐ 戊子, then Dīng Hài 丁亥, retracing the seasons the other way. By mid-life the two sequences share almost nothing, which is why fixing direction is the very first line of any luck-pillar work.

A worked example: 2026, one year, two directions

Take the current year as a live case. 2026 is Bǐng Wǔ 丙午, and Bǐng 丙 is a yang stem. A boy born in 2026 therefore runs forward from his month pillar; a girl born the same week runs backward. Their natal charts may be nearly identical, but their ten-year cycles will visit opposite halves of the sixty cycle first. For what the year itself carries, see our guide to the 2026 Bing Wu Fire Horse year.

Now flip the polarity. 2023 was Guǐ Mǎo 癸卯, and Guǐ 癸 is a yin stem, so the assignments reverse: a boy born in 2023 runs backward, a girl forward. Two brothers born in 2023 and 2026 walk opposite directions not because of anything in their day pillars but because their year stems sit on opposite sides of the yin-yang line.

Why direction is decided once

Direction never changes over a lifetime. It is a property of the chart, set the moment the year and gender are fixed, and it works hand in hand with the starting age to place the pillars on a timeline. Once you know both, the full sequence is determined.

This is also why two people born days apart can have luck pillars marching in opposite directions: a different year stem polarity, or the opposite gender, flips the whole road. The natal stems and branches feeding this sit in our reference on the heavenly stems and earthly branches.

Forward is not better than backward

A misconception worth retiring: that a forward road is auspicious and a backward road is somehow a life in reverse. Direction carries no verdict at all. It only decides which stem-and-branch pairs your decades will visit, and whether those decades help or press depends entirely on what your day master needs, which is a separate judgement made against the natal chart. A backward chart can walk straight into its most supportive elements while a forward chart walks away from them, and vice versa.

In practice we treat direction as pure bookkeeping. The evaluation happens later, pillar by pillar, using the method on our page about how to read a luck pillar against the chart it visits.

Common mistakes when fixing direction

The first mistake is reading the year stem off the Gregorian calendar. The Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) year begins at the solar term Lì Chūn (立春 lìchūn) in early February, not on 1 January. A birth in mid-January belongs to the previous year’s stem, and if that flips the polarity, it flips the direction with it.

The second mistake is using the wrong stem altogether. Beginners sometimes reach for the day stem because the Day Master feels central to everything else. For direction, only the year stem’s polarity counts. A yin day stem sitting under a yang year stem still gives a male chart a forward road.

The third is forgetting that direction also controls the starting-age count. A forward chart counts the days from birth to the next jié (節 jié); a backward chart counts back to the previous jié. Settle the bazi da yun direction first, or the age calculation that follows will point at the wrong solar term entirely.

A fourth, quieter error is trusting a hand-copied table. The four-row table above is short enough to memorise wrongly, and a swapped cell reverses someone’s entire sequence. When in doubt, derive it from the principle: yang year and male share polarity, so they move with the cycle; break the match on either side and the road reverses.

Direction, then age, then reading

Order your work: settle direction from the table above, then run the starting age calculation to place the first pillar on the clock. For the broader picture of how these ten-year cycles shape a life, see our guide to luck pillars and da yun, and for the questions that come up once the sequence is in front of you, the luck pillar FAQ covers the usual ones. The free calculator applies the direction rule automatically if you would rather check your run than derive it.

If you would rather have the direction, timing and meaning read together against your natal chart, a Butcher Boy reading gives you an hour with the chart on the table and a written summary to keep.
