What Qi Men gives you
Qi Men lays a question over the Nine Palaces (九宫 jiǔ gōng), a 3×3 grid built on the Luo Shu (洛书 luò shū) magic square. Four layers stack on that board: the Earth Plate of stems, the Heaven Plate carrying the Nine Stars (九星 jiǔ xīng), the Eight Gates (八门 bā mén), and the Eight Deities (八神 bā shén). The Eight Gates are the layer most people meet first because they are the most practical, the door you move through.
Per the reference we work from, the three auspicious gates (三吉门 sān jí mén) are 开 (kāi, Open), 休 (xiū, Rest), and 生 (shēng, Life); the inauspicious set is 死 (sǐ, Death), 惊 (jīng, Fright), and 伤 (shāng, Harm); while 杜 (dù, block) and 景 (jǐng, display) are situational. How practitioners use them together
In practice the two systems layer cleanly. Ba Zi sets the strategy; Qi Men sets the tactics. Suppose a chart shows a favourable window for a career move over the next luck pillar, wealth elements strengthening, an Open-Gate kind of ambition. Ba Zi tells you the season is right. Qi Men then helps choose the actual day and direction to act inside that season, the auspicious gate’s compass position and the Duty Gate for travel.
The order matters. Reading a Qi Men plate for a decision the Ba Zi chart says is fundamentally against your grain is polishing a doorknob on a wall. Destiny frames the range of good moves; strategy picks the best one within it. When schools differ, and they genuinely do in Qi Men, rotating-plate (转盘 zhuǎn pán) versus flying-plate (飞盘 fēi pán), or the 拆补 (chāi bǔ) versus 置闰 (zhì rùn) handling of solar terms, a practitioner names the school rather than pretending there is one universal board.
