The winter solstice festival, 冬至 (Dōngzhì), falls on Tuesday 22 December 2026. The exact solar term arrives at 04:50 Singapore time, which is the same clock as Beijing (UTC+8), so the date is the same whether you read a Singapore calendar or a Chinese almanac. On the lunar calendar it is 冬月十四 (dōngyuè shísì), the fourteenth day of the eleventh lunar month.
This page covers the date, what families do on the day, why the solstice carries the meaning it does, and the one point where people most often get the Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) calendar wrong: the solstice does not change your year pillar.
When is the winter solstice festival in 2026
冬至 is one of the 24 solar terms (节气 jiéqì), the points that divide the sun’s yearly path into equal steps. It marks the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Because it follows the sun rather than the moon, its date barely moves on the Western calendar, while its lunar date shifts each year.
For Singapore readers, the practical answer is simple: the festival day is Tuesday 22 December 2026. The 04:50 timing matters for chart work, not for dinner plans.
| Year | Date and time (UTC+8) | Weekday | Lunar date | Day pillar | Month pillar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 2025-12-21 23:03 | Sun | 冬月初二 | 甲子 (Jiǎ Zǐ — Yang Wood over Water Rat) | 戊子 (Wù Zǐ — Yang Earth over Water Rat) |
| 2026 | 2026-12-22 04:50 | Tue | 冬月十四 | 庚午 (Gēng Wǔ — Yang Metal over Fire Horse) | 庚子 (Gēng Zǐ — Yang Metal over Water Rat) |
| 2027 | 2027-12-22 10:42 | Wed | 冬月廿五 | 乙亥 (Yǐ Hài — Yin Wood over Water Pig) | 壬子 (Rén Zǐ — Yang Water over Water Rat) |
| 2028 | 2028-12-21 16:19 | Thu | 冬月初六 | 庚辰 (Gēng Chén — Yang Metal over Earth Dragon) | 甲子 (Jiǎ Zǐ — Yang Wood over Water Rat) |
Note that 2025 and 2028 fall on the 21st. Checking the year in front of you, rather than assuming “always the 22nd”, saves the usual confusion.
Customs: what families do
A common saying runs 冬至大过年 (dōngzhì dà guò nián), “Winter Solstice is bigger than New Year”. In practice it is a quieter festival than the Lunar New Year, but it is a firm family date. In Singapore and Malaysia, families gather and eat tangyuan (汤圆 tāngyuán), glutinous rice balls served in syrup or soup. For the autumn family festival before it, our collection of mooncake festival wishes sets out greetings, classic moon lines and the etiquette around them.
Southern Chinese and Hokkien families also make 冬至圆 (dōngzhì yuán), the solstice rice balls rolled at home. In northern China, dumplings (饺子 jiǎozi) are the traditional dish instead. Some families also make offerings to ancestors on the day.
That is the whole of it. There is no rule set you must follow to stay safe, and anyone selling solstice taboos or rituals with a price tag is adding something the festival never required. The custom is the gathering.
The meaning: longest night, first yang
The cosmology behind the festival is compact. At the solstice, yin reaches its peak and the first yang returns. The phrase is 一阳生 (yī yáng shēng), “one yang is born”. From this night onward the days lengthen, even though the coldest weather is still ahead. Yang numbers also give the Double Ninth Festival (重阳) its name, on the ninth day of the ninth month, and its customs are set out on its own page.
The I Ching (易经 Yìjīng) hexagram traditionally paired with the solstice is 24 复 Fù, “Return”: five yin lines above a single yang line at the bottom, the image of light coming back from below. The Hexagram 24 Fù page covers the hexagram in full. The lesson practitioners take from it is about timing: the turn has happened, but it is small, so it is a season to rest and build rather than to push.
The winter solstice festival in Ba Zi
In Ba Zi the solstice sits inside a month, it does not open one. Months in a chart begin at the twelve 节 (jié) solar terms, and 冬至 is the midpoint (中气 zhōngqì) of the 子 (Zǐ) month. In 2026 that month pillar is 庚子 (Gēng Zǐ — Yang Metal over Water Rat), and it began at 大雪 (Dàxuě) on 2026-12-07 10:52. It runs until 小寒 (Xiǎohán) on 2027-01-05 22:09.
The day pillar of 22 December 2026 is 庚午 (Gēng Wǔ — Yang Metal over Fire Horse). A child born that day has 庚 Metal as the Day Master, sitting on a Fire branch in the deepest Water month of the year, which is exactly the kind of tension a full reading weighs.
The point most often missed: the year pillar does not change at 冬至. Anyone born after the solstice in December 2026, or in January 2027, still has the 2026 year pillar, 丙午 (Bǐng Wǔ), the Fire Horse year. The Ba Zi year turns at 立春 (Lìchūn) on 2027-02-04 09:45 (UTC+8), and that is also when the annual flying stars change. The lunar new year, covered on the Chinese New Year 2027 page, is a different boundary again.
Some schools do treat 冬至 as a turning point of the year. Certain Qi Men and Zi Wei practices use it that way, as did the old 周历 (Zhōu lì) calendar. Those are real traditions, but they are not this site’s method for Ba Zi, and the calculator does not use them.
For the month-by-month boundaries either side of the solstice, see the Ba Zi calendar 2026 and the Ba Zi calendar 2027.
Keeping the festival, reading the season
Enjoy the winter solstice festival for what it is: a family meal on the longest night, with tangyuan on the table. If someone in the family was born in late December or January, it is also a good moment to check which year pillar they really carry, since the solstice and the lunar new year both mislead people. See the 子 month in your own chart, or a December birthday’s true year pillar, by plotting it free with the Ba Zi calculator.
