2026 is the year of the Fire Horse — in full, the Bǐng Wǔ (丙午) year: Yang Fire sitting on the Horse branch. It is one of the most talked-about years in the sixty-year cycle, and most of what is written about it confuses two different start dates. Here are the facts first.
When the 2026 zodiac year actually starts
Two answers, both correct for different purposes. The festival — Chinese New Year — falls on 17 February 2026: that is when the lunar year begins and the celebrations happen. But for Chinese astrology and Ba Zi (八字 bāzì), the year changes at Li Chun (立春), the solar start of spring: 4 February 2026 at 04:01 (UTC+8). Born in January or February 2026 — which animal are you?
This is the question the placemats get wrong. For chart purposes, anyone born from 1 January 2026 up to the Li Chun moment still carries the previous year pillar — the Yǐ Sì (乙巳) Wood Snake. From Li Chun onward, the year pillar is Fire Horse, regardless of the fact that the lunar festival is still a fortnight away. So a 3 February 2026 birth is a Snake; a 5 February birth is a Horse; and a birth in the small hours of 4 February itself comes down to the clock — before 04:01, Snake; after, Horse.

What kind of year is a Fire Horse?
Bǐng 丙 is the sun; Wǔ 午 is peak yang, midsummer, the gallop. Doubled Fire means visibility, momentum and heat — a launch-and-be-seen year that rewards preparation and punishes improvisation. Those one-liners sort the twelve into four honest groups. The engaged group — Rat and Ox — has the year’s branch actively interacting with theirs, by clash and harm respectively. That means movement and friction themes are more likely to surface; it does not mean misfortune. A clash year is frequently the year the overdue decision finally gets made.
The supported group — Tiger, Dog and Goat — connects to the year through harmony or combination: cooperative conditions, doors opening more easily. Support is an easier headwind, not a guarantee; a supported year still rewards only the plans that exist. The amplified group — Horse and Snake — shares the year’s Fire.
