Of all the ideas that draw people to feng shui (風水 fēng shuǐ), the feng shui wealth corner is the most sought after and the most misunderstood. It is imagined as a single magic spot where a coin bowl or a jade plant quietly turns on the money. The truth is calmer and more useful. The wealth corner is a zone of the Bagua (八卦 bā guà) map associated with abundance, and its power is ordinary: you keep it clean, well-lit, and lightly alive, and you stop working against it. This guide shows how to locate the corner two different ways, what genuinely belongs there, and where the personalised layer begins.
Before any cure, one caution sets the tone. A wealth corner is a support, not a lever. Feng shui arranges space so that the people in it can act well; it does not replace the acting. Treat the corner as good housekeeping with intention behind it, and it earns its keep. Treat it as a slot machine, and it disappoints.
Two ways to find the wealth corner
There are two established methods, and they genuinely disagree on where the corner sits. Name the one you are using rather than mixing them, or you will chase your tail.
The classical compass Bagua fixes the wealth-and-abundance zone to the southeast of a space, governed by the trigram Xun (巽 xùn) and the Wood element (木 mù). To use it, take a compass bearing and find the southeast sector of your home, or of a single important room. That sector is the wealth corner in this tradition, wherever it happens to fall — a corner of the living room, a stretch of hallway, or part of a bedroom.
The Western or BTB Bagua ignores the compass and aligns the map to the entrance instead. Stand in the doorway of your home or a room looking in, and the far-left corner from that threshold is the money corner. Many people find this one easier because it needs no compass and applies cleanly to a rented room or an apartment with an odd footprint.
Both are defensible, and both are widely practised. If you want the most reliable result, pick the method you can apply consistently and treat the whole space and each key room the same way. Because the southeast wealth zone belongs to the Wood element, the cures that suit it either are Wood or feed Wood. In the five elements (五行 wǔxíng), the productive cycle runs Water → Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water. So Water nourishes Wood, and living Wood embodies the zone directly. That is the whole basis of the classic wealth-corner enhancements.
A healthy plant. Living Wood is the most natural activation for this corner. Choose species with soft, rounded, or upward leaves rather than spiky ones, and keep the plant genuinely thriving — a struggling plant in the wealth corner works against you, so tend it or move it out. A small, clean water feature. Because Water feeds Wood, a modest tabletop fountain or a bowl of clean water supports the zone. Keep the water fresh and moving, never stagnant, and keep the scale modest — a large water feature can overwhelm a small room rather than help it.
Wood tones and upward shapes. Greens and browns, tall columnar forms, timber materials, and images of healthy growth all reinforce the element without any single object having to carry the meaning.
Good light. A dim corner reads as neglected. A lamp, or a mirror bouncing daylight in, lifts the zone before any specific cure. The most reliable wealth-corner enhancement is simply that the corner is clean, lit, and cared for.
Notice that none of these needs a shop full of symbolic objects. A single well-tended plant beside a clean surface in a lit corner does more than a crowded shelf of charms. The intention matters, but the housekeeping matters more.
What to keep clear
Half the work in the wealth corner is subtraction. The zone drains when it collects the wrong things, and the fixes are usually removals rather than purchases.
Clutter. This is the most common and most reversible problem. Piles of paper, storage boxes, and forgotten junk in the wealth corner create stagnant qi (氣 qì) exactly where you want gentle vitality. Clearing the corner is the single highest-leverage change most people can make.
Bins, dead plants, and broken things. A rubbish bin, a dying plant, or anything broken sitting in the abundance zone sends the opposite message. Keep it out.
Too much Fire. Wood feeds Fire, so strong Fire in the corner — a cluster of red, bright heat, a stack of candles — burns through the element rather than supporting it. A touch of warmth is fine; a Fire-dominated corner is not.
Too much Metal. In the controlling cycle, Metal cuts Wood. A heavy concentration of metal objects, white and grey, or sharp metallic decor in the wealth corner works against the Wood zone. Balance it toward Wood and Water instead.
Drains and damp. If a bathroom, toilet, or floor drain falls in your wealth sector, the reading is that qi and water — which carries wealth in this tradition — leave through it. Work in this order and the corner mostly takes care of itself: clear it, light it, keep it clean, then add one living Wood or Water cure. That sequence beats any single lucky object.
The personalised layer: your own wealth element
Everything above is universal — it treats the room, not the person. It is enough to arrange most homes well, and it is the right place to start. But the wealth corner has a personalised layer too, and this is where feng shui hands off to Ba Zi.
Feng shui is Ba Zi’s spatial sibling: where feng shui reads the room, Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) reads the person. Both speak the same five-element language.
