The Wood Dragon year is written 甲辰 (Jiǎ Chén): Yang Wood sitting on the Dragon, an Earth branch. In the sixty-year cycle of the Chinese calendar its most recent turns were 1964 and 2024, and it comes round again in 2084. If you were born under it, this is your year pillar — the outermost of the four pillars that make up a full Ba Zi (八字 bāzì) chart.
One caution before anything else. The year pillar does not change on 1 January. It turns at Li Chun (立春 lìchūn), the solar start of spring around 4 February. The Na Yin (纳音 nàyīn) of 甲辰 is 覆灯火, Shielded Lamp Fire — the flame kept behind glass or paper. It is not the bonfire that shows off; it is the lamp that keeps burning through a long night because something guards it from the wind. That image suits the pillar well: steady warmth, contained rather than broadcast, valued precisely because it does not gutter out.
Dragon in 2026
2026 is the year of Bing Wu, the Fire Horse (丙午 bǐng wǔ). For the Wood Dragon branch there is no major clash or combination with 2026 — so read the year by its elements, not by drama. No — and this catches many families. Until Li Chun on 4 February 2024 the year pillar was still 癸卯, the Water Rabbit of 2023. The Wood Dragon pillar governs births from that solar term onward, which is why we insist on plotting the date rather than reading the calendar year.
Are the 1964 and 2024 Dragons the same sign?
They carry the identical pillar, 甲辰 — the sexagenary cycle repeats exactly every sixty years. What differs is everything else: month, day and hour pillars, and the luck cycles those generate. The year pair is shared; the chart is not.
Does sitting on wealth make the Wood Dragon rich?
Not by itself. “Wealth” names the element a stem controls — a structural relationship, not a bank balance. It suggests an aptitude for holding and organising resources; whether that converts into anything depends on the other seven characters and their timing.
